12th Toe Wrestling Championship Results

The 12th World Toe Wrestling Championships have been held in Ashbourne, England and they were as controversial as ever.

Each tie is the best of three legs taking place at the 'toedium' and the sexes are strictly segregated to stop any 'mixamytoesis'. Competitors interlock their big toes on the Toesrack, with the heel of each competitor in their own section. Each player must keep his or her non-wrestling foot off the ground but part of his or her bottom on the ground.

The referee starts the competition with the words "Toes Away", then players try to force their opponent's foot over or along, making it touch the footrest of the toesrack (a bit like arm wrestling.) This manoeuvre is known as a 'Toe Down' In the men's competition it was a tough and controversial bout between reigning champion Paul 'The Toeminator' Beech from Staffordshire and Alan 'Nasty' Nash from Stoke-On-Trent. Beech came out on top with Nash disputing the win, but the referee's decision was final.

The competition was a family affair indeed this year with the 'Toeminator's' wife Heather Beech facing off against her sister Alison Redfern of Branston, Burton-on-Trent. Mrs Toeminator was too tough and beat her sister. It was a sweet victory for Mr Toeminator - winning back to back titles, and keeping the prize off of Nash who had previously won the competition five times. The World Toe Wrestling Competition was resurrected in 1994, after about a 20 year gap, and all proceeds from the tournament go to the charity 'When You Wish Upon a Star'.
